Third graders have completed two cycles of word work, so far. The next cycle will start on Monday, 11/7. Students' assessments will be coming home!
Dear Families,
We have started word study in third grade! Your child has a word work teacher-- Mrs. Formica, Mrs. Leavitt, or Mrs. Rich. Each word work sort will take place over two weeks. On Mondays, your child meets with his/her word work teacher. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, your child participates in various word work activities during the flex period with Mrs. Rich. On the second Thursday, your child will be assessed. Word study focuses on learning the visual and sound patterns for spelling words. It is our goal that students become strategic word solvers who can apply spelling strategies in their writing and reading. We also hope students become excited about spelling! Homework will not be assigned. Each time your child starts a new sort, the words will be sent home. If you wish to continue the study of your child’s words, you can engage your child in various word study activities, such as: Blind sort-- Your child sets up the headers/categories. Dictate a word. Your child says the word, spells the word, and writes the word under the correct header. Together, check the spelling. Word Hunt-- Using a section of a book your child has already read, skim to find additional words with the same spelling feature. Write the words down. Writing Sort-- Your child can sort the words into the appropriate columns. Then, he/she can say, spell and write the words. Words into sentences--Students can write sentences with spelling words that show the word’s meaning. Sand, salt, sugar, flour writing--use a cookie sheet and flour and students finger-write their spelling words. Save flour in baggie for multiple uses. Quizlet.com and Spellingcity.com are two websites that let you make your own spelling test activities. Wordsortwizard.com has free online games that students can play. Have fun! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s homeroom teacher! The Third Grade Teachers, Mrs. Formica Mrs. Leavitt Mrs. Rich |
